About Toby
Toby Perkins has been the Labour MP for Chesterfield since the 2010 general election, when he took the seat from the Liberal Democrats by 549 votes. He was re-elected in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2024.
Born in Reading in 1970, he has lived in Chesterfield throughout his adult life. Before Parliament he worked in the private sector — including IT sales and running his own small business selling rugby clothing — and represented Rother ward on Chesterfield Borough Council from 2003 to 2011.
At Westminster he has held shadow ministerial posts covering education and skills, small business, the armed forces and rural affairs. In September 2024 he was elected chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, which scrutinises how government policy affects the environment and sustainable development.
